Houston Community Garden
Producing Food for Food Pantry
 
The American Community Gardening Association describes a community garden as "...any piece of land gardened by a group of people."
Houston, Missouri is fortunate to have a group willing to give of their time and labor to provide a community garden to benefit the Food Pantry and others in need!
If you would like to become of a part of Houston Community Garden Project you may contact JoLean Durham, the Texas County Memorial Hospital representative at 417-967-1258.
 
Who will Garden?
 
1.  Master Gardeners
2.  4H Youth
3.  Gardening Students
4.  Local Citizens
5.  High School Culinary and Food Management Classes
 
Type of Work
 
Planters, soil workers, harvesters, insect spotters, hand watering, mulching
 
Needed
 
1.  Volunteer Help
2.   Equipment: Plowing, hauling, stable cleaning, compost turning &  
      garden building 
3.  Technical help and advice from successful local gardeners
4.  Consumers:  locals, food pantry, roadside sales, kitchens
5.  Food waste, restaurant waste, newspaper, coffee grounds, egg shells, melon
     rinds, outdated or mouldy food goods, etc.
6.  Farm waste, stable cleanings, manure from rabbits, chickens, cows and horses.
7.  Unusable hay of any sort, wood chips, grass and hedge clippings.
8.  Lumber (used or broken o.k.), boxes or bins of any sort, string, ties, paper, safe 
   and biodegradable materials like paper or cardboard, sawdust or wood shavings.
