Get Aquainted With Houston Mo.

Houston Mo. is a rural community within Texas County. Legend has it that Sam Houston stopped overnight in the village en route to Texas and gained many admirers. Thus, the town was named for the founder of the new state of Texas. June 1846 is Houston's official birthday.
 
In 1890, the Bank of Houston purchased $100.00 worth of stock in the Houston and Cabool Telephone Co. The first telephone lines were strung from Houston to Cabool in 1891.
 
Early records indicate that a light system was discussed in 1906 by The Houston Chamber of Commerce. In 1908, Dr. P.A. Herrington a pharmacist, purchased the Lone Star Mill west of Houston on Big Piney River and electricity was generated for the town. In 1952, Houston voters approved a bond issue that enabled Houston to buy and maintain its own light system.
 
Former President Truman came to Houston on November 7, 1958, to dedicate the new Texas County Memorial Hospital. Dr. T.J. Burns, who once worked in the White House as a doctor, was instrumental in getting the hospital built.
 
Houston is the hometown of Emmett Kelly Sr., the famous clown know as "Weary Willie" born December 9, 1898, in Sedan, Kansas. He moved with his family to a farm east of Houston. The rags to riches career for Kelly started in Houston, where Emmett got his first profesional assignment at the Old Settlers Reunion.. He gained the title of the "The Worlds Greatest Clown" from Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey. He never forgot his hometown, and he gave his fellow townsmen credit for his start in business. His last visit to Houston was in 1975 when a roadside park was dedicated to him. He died suddenly two years later in his home of Sarasota, Fla.
 
Today Houston looks to the future. With an A+ School system, SMSU campus, a technical school, excellent medical services, competent work force, state of the art fiber optics/communications capabilities and wide range of services available.
 
Houston Mo. and Texas County have become a desirable place to relocate. Many new residents find lower property taxes are another incentive to purchase a home in Houston.
